Today we're going to analyze Ben Affleck's famous sales speech in 2000 Movie 'Boiler Room' and learn about the core differences between persuasion and manipulation in sales. In the beginning of the scene Affleck walks into the room and immediately establishes himself as a governing personality by laying claim to a chair at head of the table. I was told Ben Affleck‘s brief but intense scenes were worth watching it for, and they are. They whole film had a great feel about it, I loved Wall Street and The Wolf Of Wall Street, and Boiler Room really First well into this genre. Plenty of fresh faces and a well paced story. Definitely a film I’d watch again.
- The economy was booming and the tragedy of 9/11 was yet to come. The time was ripe to make money and create a few scams along the way. A great cast heads a movie about greed, honesty and family relationships. A young Giovanni Ribisi and Vin Diesel that heads a cast that include Ben Affleck, Nia Long, Scott Caan and Ron Rifkin.
- The career of Ben Affleck has been going on for long enough that at this point it’s best understood when broken down into eras. The first era was obviously highlighted by Good Will Hunting, with the second one best described as the one where Affleck shot his shot to become a big-time movie star. The third starts around the beginning of this century and isn’t a particularly great one for.
A few weeks ago we were having a discussion on Twitter about the greatest finance movies. Here’s the list we came up with:
- The Big Short
- Trading Places
- Wall Street
- Boiler Room
- Margin Call
- The Wolf of Wall Street
Someone then had the bright idea to recommend Michael and I re-watch some of these classics to see how well (or poorly) they aged, discuss how realistic they are/were, and talk about how things have changed in the markets since they came out.
For the first one, we decided to check out Boiler Room, the late-1990s/early-2000s movie about the old school chop shop commission-based brokerage firms who ripped off their clients. Harry potter and the cursed child book.
We discuss:
- How many millionaires did Microsoft produce in the 1990s?
- Can you believe people used to actually buy stocks from people who cold-called them on the phone?
- Did people really pay $2/share for stock commissions?
- What’s Vin Diesel’s real name?
- Is Ben Affleck’s speech one of his all-time acting performances?
- Would Matt Damon have made this movie much better as the star?
- Why selling is so important in finance.
- Is Boiler Room better than The Wolf of Wall Street?
- How normal people view the finance industry and much more.
